Agios Petros is a lovely secluded beach next to Steni Vala with inviting sandy bottom dotted with colonies of Poseidonia sea-weeds. The nearest village is Steni Vala (only 500 m) whereas the Port of Patitiri is 8 km.
Originally the valley of Agios Petros was an agricultural area, the domain of two Alonnisos families, who patiently worked the land planting olive trees on the slopes and vines, orange trees and lemon trees in the flatland. The agricultural past of Agios Petros still remains its predominant feature as the villa owners went into great pains not to destroy even a single tree, in some cases they even enriched the existing varieties by planting more.
In the valley of Agios Petros there existed two private wells for the needs of the families private or agricultural. A third ”public well“ was dug up close to the beach for the use of the Sheppards of the surrounding hamlets of Isomata ,Gouves and Steni Vala.
The fortunate outcome of the land ownership by only two families has helped keep building in Agios Petros in check. The few villas that dot the hillside do not violently deform the original character of the landscape. Most of the houses are built with materials taken from the land itself so they are in harmony with it. This has not escaped the attention of the visitor who commended on it favourably, as they have done for the unique and uninterrupted forest of makia vegetation that extends beyond the valley.
The bay of Agios Petros is also the favourite spot of the Steni-Vala-based Diving Center who use the shallow and bio-rich waters around the rocky islet at the mouth of the bay for their initiation dives. Just a few meters inside, in the shelter of the bay, a small jetty is available to the boat owners who can use it as a base to ”invade“ the near-by beaches of Alonnisos or Peristera.
The jetty is also a hot spot for the children who use it as a diving platform or in lieu of it.
